Christopher Newport Senior Chiraag Shetty and Salisbury Senior Eric Spangler Earn CAC Men's Tennis Weekly Honors

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport senior Chiraag Shetty and Salisbury senior Eric Spangler were selected as the CAC Men's Tennis Co-Players of the Week for March 29, 2016.

Christopher Newport senior Chiraag Shetty secured CAC Men's Tennis weekly honors after clinching the decisive point in the Captains' upset 5-4 victory over 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins last Saturday. Shetty's singles win at the No. 4 spot closed out the match as he took down Justin Kang 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-2. He also won at No. 1 doubles with partner Steven Boslet, defeating Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin, 8-4.

Salisbury senior Eric Spangler was chosen as the CAC Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Week for the second time this year after defeating the 32nd-ranked player in the nation last week. Spangler earned Salisbury's two points agianst Mary Washington last Wednesday, topping 32nd-ranked Brandon Griffin at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. He also teamed with doubles partner Shanon Gunther for a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

All eight CAC teams have now played at least two conference contests ... Five CAC matches are on the slate this week ... Christopher Newport's non-conference victory over Johns Hopkins was its fourth over a nationally-ranked foe this season. Chiraag Shetty and Steven Boslet have won four straight doubles matches and lead the team with 12 doubles wins ... Sophomore Eric Hurwitz helped keep the No. 21 Eagles undefeated in CAC action on Wednesday at Salisbury with a pair of wins. He stepped up to No. 2 singles, and won in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, and also teamed with Nolan Perugini to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-1 ... Penn State Harrisburg's Tyler Cook posted a 4-0 week, winning both of his singles and doubles matches in victories over Lebanon Valley (7-2) and Frostburg State (5-4) ... Southern Virginia went 2-0 last week, defeating Ferrum (5-4) and York (7-2) to improve to 6-6 on the year. Justin Fullmer went 4-0 at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles to lead the Knights.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
