Christopher Newport Sophomore Nicholas Ruzicka Claims CAC Men's Tennis Weekly Award

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport sophomore Nicholas Ruzicka was tabbed as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for March 14, 2017.

Christopher Newport sophomore Nicholas Ruzicka was tabbed as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after registering a 2-1 mark in singles and a 3-1 mark in doubles during the Captains' spring trip to California. Playing at No. 6 singles, Ruzicka defeated Chapman's Len Kamemoto (6-1, 6-3), and Cal Lutheran's Sebastian Ariza (6-2, 6-1), before falling to No. 18 Redlands' No. 6, Avery Davis (7-5, 6-3). He also won three of his four doubles matchups at the No. 3 position. Ruzicka and Michael Dodd captured wins against Chapman and Redlands, and he teamed with Arttu Fiva for a victory against Cal Lutheran.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Four CAC teams were in action last week ... Penn State Harrisburg and York are slated to open their spring campaigns this week ... Mary Washington wrapped up its spring break trip to California with matches against Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands last week ... St. Mary's junior Connor McKissick picked up the lone point for St. Mary's against Hampden-Sydney with his 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 victory over Hampden-Sydney's Trent Singleton at No. 3 singles ... Southern Virginia defeated Lynchburg 5-4 in its only matchup of the week. Freshman Tanner Bassett was one of two Knights to win both singles and doubles in the win. Bassett won at No. 2 doubles 8-3 and No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
