Christopher Newport's Reed, Cerny Fall in NCAA Doubles First Round

Making the program's first appearance at the NCAA Doubles National Championship in 10 years, a pair of Christopher Newport juniors battled hard to force a third set, but fell in the opening round of competition on Thursday afternoon. Justin Cerny and David Reed suffered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 loss in the first round of the 2017 championship event, wrapping up a banner season for the Christopher Newport men's tennis program.

The 30th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team made quick work of their opponent in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship on Friday morning, picking up the program's second ever team tournament victory, 5-0. The Captains (15-9) downed Franciscan University (10-11) with a doubles sweep and victories at No. 1 and No. 6 in singles action.

York freshman Ben Sentz was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles to spearhead a late-season surge for the Spartans into the CAC semifinals. Sentz began the week with a 6-3, 6-0 No. 2 singles win against Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday, while also combining with Tyler Richard for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. He followed that with a 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles triumph and an 8-1 No. 2 doubles win against Frostburg State, helping the Spartans clinch the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament. He then closed out his week with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles in the first round of the CAC Tournament against Southern Virginia, leading the Spartans to a 5-3 team win.

With a 5-1 win over third-seeded Salisbury on Tuesday afternoon, second-seeded and 35th-ranked Christopher Newport punched its ticket to a third consecutive appearance in the CAC Men's Tennis Championship. The Captains cruised to the win in the CAC semifinal match on a breezy, but sunny day at the Eyre Courts on the campus of Christopher Newport.

Mary Washington freshman Ryland Byrd collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after winning all of his singles and doubles matches this past weekend, including a pair of victories in the Eagles' 5-4 loss to No. 7 Carnegie Mellon. Byrd went 2-0 in singles at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, and teamed with Michael Fleming for a perfect 3-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. Against Carnegie Mellon, he outlasted his opponent 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, and posted an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles with Fleming.

Mary Washington freshman Ryland Byrd picked up CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week accolades after winning all of his singles and doubles matches in a 4-1 week for the 16th-ranked Eagles. Byrd won all five of his singles and all five of his doubles matches, helping the Eagles improve to 14-5. He gained wins at No. 5 singles over Salisbury and Frostburg State, and won at No. 6 singles against Southern Virginia, TCNJ, and Swarthmore. He teamed with Michael Fleming to gain five wins at No. 1 doubles as well.

Mary Washington sophomore Matt Miles earned CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week recognition after winning all three of his singles matches and two out of three doubles matches in wins over Bates, Christopher Newport, and Franklin & Marshall. Against Bates, Miles posted a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles over Chris Ellis and teamed with Derek Hagino for an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Against CNU, he downed Justin Cerny 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, helping UMW secure a crucial 5-4 victory. Against F&M, Miles won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Jack Rothman, and teamed with Hagino for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Miles is ranked 49th in the nation, and 12th in the Middle Atlantic region.

Mary Washington was once again the unanimous choice to sit atop the CAC this spring in a preseason vote among the conference men's tennis coaches. The Eagles, who are seeking their 18th straight CAC crown this season, received seven first-place votes and 49 points to land atop the poll.
