York Freshman Ben Sentz Named CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- York freshman Ben Sentz was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for on April 18, 2017.

York freshman Ben Sentz was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles to spearhead a late-season surge for the Spartans into the CAC semifinals. Sentz began the week with a 6-3, 6-0 No. 2 singles win against Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday, while also combining with Tyler Richard for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. He followed that with a 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles triumph and an 8-1 No. 2 doubles win against Frostburg State, helping the Spartans clinch the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament. He then closed out his week with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles in the first round of the CAC Tournament against Southern Virginia, leading the Spartans to a 5-3 team win.

The CAC Tournament began last Friday and continues this week ... In the first round on Friday, fifth-seeded York upended fourth-seeded Southern Virginia 5-3 to advance to the semifinals ... The semifinal round opens Tuesday as No. 2 Christopher Newport hosts No. 3 Salisbury, while York will travel to top-seeded Mary Washington on Wednesday for the other semifinal ... The CAC Championship is slated for Friday at the highest remaining seed ... In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, Mary Washington is No. 17 and Christopher Newport is No. 35 ... In the ITA regional rankings, UMW is No. 3 and CNU is No. 9 ... In the ITA singles regional rankings, CNU's David Reed is No. 8 while UMW's Matt Miles is No. 13 ... Reed and Justin Cerny are No. 2 in the doubles regional rankings at No. 3, while UMW's Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming are No. 3 ... Mary Washington didn't compete last week, but moved to No. 17 nationally in the latest ITA poll.

Griffin was the top finisher for the Eagles this weekend against Division opposition at the Navy Invitational, advancing all the way to the finals of his bracket. He defeated Blaise Castleberry of Delaware, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, then topped Mac Rechan of Georgetown, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. He then beat Tucker Massey of Navy, 7-5, 6-3, before falling in the final to Elliott Loubataille of UMBC, 6-2, 6-3.
