Salisbury Senior Eric Spangler Earns CAC Men's Tennis Weekly Award for Third Time
YORK, Pa. -- Salisbury senior Eric Spangler earned CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for April 12, 2016.

Salisbury senior Eric Spangler was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season after posting a 7-1 combined singles and doubles mark last week for the Sea Gulls. He claimed his four singles matches in straight sets while taking three of four doubles contests. Spangler gave up just eight total games in his singles wins, including a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Christopher Newport's Justin Cerny, the 17th-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region. With his four singles victories, Spangler tied Evan Thomas for the most singles wins in program history with 59. In doubles play, Spangler and senior partner Shanon Gunther earned wins of 8-2, 8-0, and 8-3. Their only loss was an 8-5 defeat to the No. 5-ranked team in the region from CNU.

Mary Washington defeated Christopher Newport 9-0 last Saturday to clinch its eighth straight unbeaten CAC regular season and secure the top seed in the CAC Tournament ... UMW has now won 44 consecutive CAC contests with their last loss coming during the 2008 season ... With just two matches left in the CAC regular season - both set for today - the five-team CAC Tournament field and matchups are already set. No. 2 Christopher Newport will host No. 3 Salisbury in the semifinals on Wednesday, April 20, while No. 1 UMW will host the winner of the first round matchup between No. 5 St. Mary's and No. 4 Southern Virginia. The first round match is slated for Saturday, April 16 ... In the March 31 ITA National Rankings, Christopher Newport jumped nine spots to No. 20, while Mary Washington dropped six spots to No. 27 ... In the Atlantic South Regionally rankings, CNU is No. 3 and UMW is No. 9 ... In the individual regional rankings, CNU's David Reed is No. 7, Salisbury's Eric Spangler is No. 10, UMW's David Lunding Johansson is No. 15, CNU's Justin Cerny is No. 17, and UMW's Brandon Griffin is No. 19 ... In regional doubles, CNU's Steven Boslet & Chiraag Shetty are ranked No. 5, and Salisbury's Eric Spangler & Shanon Gunther are No. 6 ... Freshman Patrick Hughes led #27 Mary Washington with a pair of singles wins this weekend, as the Eagles blanked #20 CNU, and fell to #7 Carnegie Mellon over the weekend. Hughes topped Dillon Sykes against CNU at six, 6-2, 6-3, on Saturday. He came back on Sunday vs. Carnegie Mellon to win at five, 7-5, 6-4 ... St. Mary's Mark Hardesty went 2-1 in both singles and doubles last week for the Seahawks ... Southern Virginia went 2-1 last week with wins over Virginia Union and Penn State Harrisburg.
