York Freshman Ben Sentz Named CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

York freshman Ben Sentz was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles to spearhead a late-season surge for the Spartans into the CAC semifinals. Sentz began the week with a 6-3, 6-0 No. 2 singles win against Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday, while also combining with Tyler Richard for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. He followed that with a 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles triumph and an 8-1 No. 2 doubles win against Frostburg State, helping the Spartans clinch the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament. He then closed out his week with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles in the first round of the CAC Tournament against Southern Virginia, leading the Spartans to a 5-3 team win.

Mary Washington freshman Ryland Byrd collected CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after winning all of his singles and doubles matches this past weekend, including a pair of victories in the Eagles' 5-4 loss to No. 7 Carnegie Mellon. Byrd went 2-0 in singles at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, and teamed with Michael Fleming for a perfect 3-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. Against Carnegie Mellon, he outlasted his opponent 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, and posted an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles with Fleming.

Mary Washington freshman Ryland Byrd picked up CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week accolades after winning all of his singles and doubles matches in a 4-1 week for the 16th-ranked Eagles. Byrd won all five of his singles and all five of his doubles matches, helping the Eagles improve to 14-5. He gained wins at No. 5 singles over Salisbury and Frostburg State, and won at No. 6 singles against Southern Virginia, TCNJ, and Swarthmore. He teamed with Michael Fleming to gain five wins at No. 1 doubles as well.

Mary Washington sophomore Matt Miles earned CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week recognition after winning all three of his singles matches and two out of three doubles matches in wins over Bates, Christopher Newport, and Franklin & Marshall. Against Bates, Miles posted a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles over Chris Ellis and teamed with Derek Hagino for an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Against CNU, he downed Justin Cerny 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, helping UMW secure a crucial 5-4 victory. Against F&M, Miles won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Jack Rothman, and teamed with Hagino for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Miles is ranked 49th in the nation, and 12th in the Middle Atlantic region.

Salisbury freshman Patrick MacLean was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after posting a 4-0 week in a pair of Sea Gull victories in California. MacLean won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles in a team win over previously-unbeaten Hampden-Sydney, and earned a 6-4, 6-7(5-7), 6-1 win at No. 4 singles against St. Lawrence. In doubles play, he earned two wins, topping his HSC opponents 9-8 (7-5) at No. 2, teaming with freshman Matthew Ryan, and winning 8-6 with senior Grant Hudson at No. 2 against St. Lawrence.

Christopher Newport sophomore Nicholas Ruzicka was tabbed as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after registering a 2-1 mark in singles and a 3-1 mark in doubles during the Captains spring trip to California. Playing at No. 6 singles, Ruzicka defeated Chapman's Len Kamemoto (6-1, 6-3), and Cal Lutheran's Sebastian Ariza (6-2, 6-1), before falling to No. 18 Redlands' No. 6, Avery Davis (7-5, 6-3). He also won three of his four doubles matchups at the No. 3 position. Ruzicka and Michael Dodd captured wins against Chapman and Redlands, and he teamed with Arttu Fiva for a victory against Cal Lutheran.

Southern Virginia freshman Tanner Basset was selected as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after powering the Knights to a 2-0 week, posting unbeaten marks in singles and doubles. Against Virginia Union, he teamed with Jake Fisher for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, before securing a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. In a 5-4 team win over Ferrum, Bassett notched again teamed with Fisher for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, securing the only doubles win for the Knights. In singles, he recorded another 6-0, 6-0 victory to help the Knights to the team win. Basset has posted 6-0 wins in five of his last seven singles sets.

Christopher Newport junior David Reed was honored as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after winning a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents in singles play. Reed defeated 29th-ranked Mark Fallati (7-5, 5-7, 6-2) from 26th-ranked Swarthmore, then took down 40th-ranked Zach Hewlin (4-6, 7-6, 10-7) from 24th-ranked Whitman. He also teamed with Justin Cerny to down another nationally-ranked opponent, 20th-ranked Fallati and Josh Powell from Swarthmore, by a score of 8-5. Reed helped the Captains go 2-1 over the weekend with 5-4 wins over No. 26 Swarthmore and Haverford.
